Their classic songs have been recorded by artists as varied as the Beatles, John Mellencamp, Lou Rawls, Aretha Franklin and Barbra Streisand. Kansas City alone, Stoller guesses, has had about 500 versions. Not long ago, the two were invited to the White House. President Clinton was excited to meet them, Stoller recalls fondly: "He broke out singing, 'The neon lights are bright on Broadway...

...same can be said of Smith. She planned to be a tap dancer ("I got too fat") or a jazz singer ("I wasn't as good as Aretha"), despite a lifelong interest in writing. She grew up in an irreligious, working-class household in London. Her father, a onetime photographer, and her mother, a model turned child psychoanalyst, divorced when she was 12. Smith took to writing short stories and poetry during an adolescence she describes as "pathologically angst ridden." Of course, Bacharach's reputation isn't improved by album covers like the one pictured here...

...Lynne, 31, "so I wasn't scared of much. I got more comfortable with my writing." I Am extends country's reach to the threshold of rock and Memphis soul, incorporating unlikely touches of Dusty Springfield and John Lennon on the jilted lover's lament Your Lies and of Aretha Franklin on the empty-bed ode Black Light Blue...
