Outside of their music, in their public life, the Stones have never projected any ideology beyond jaded anarchism. They never make statements of commitment, as Aretha Franklin did when she pledged to supply Angela Davis' bail. They never even play political benefits. (The Beach Boys, believe it or not, showed up at the Mayday rally in Washington. The Stones didn't.) On the rare occasions when Mick Jagger does play Revolutionary, it is just another pose he has assumed in order to sell records...
...rock band, then graduated into the original Steve Miller Band, much of whose best material he wrote. Shortly after leaving the Miller Band, he cut this solo album, on which he is backed by Duane Allman and the Muscle Shoals studio house band, the same group who play behind Aretha on many of her greatest hits. As a result, most of the songs on Box Scaggs (Atlantic) are arranged with a tightness and professionalism that is usually missing in white rock. With the exception of "Loan Me a Dime," a twelve-minute blues which is redeemed primarily by the quality...

Like Janis, she makes the transition from one extreme-show blues-to the other-hard rock-with utmost agility. She is a Sex Goddess and plays the role...
...raps with the audience-on the subject of women's rights. Her message, in brief, being that women want a piece of the action, too; how can the men, chasing it down on the streets, expect the women to sit home alone? Next came two songs made famous by Aretha, "Baby I Love You" and "Respect." Following those, we heard "Soul Clap" and were treated to the rare sound of an Ike Turner guitar solo. For the briefest moment, Ike took over and showed us just how mean he can be; we winced, shuddered, and were immediately left wishing...
