...Duhau Resturant & Vinoteca: Prime attraction at this minimalist venue within the Park Hyatt Buenos Aires, www.buenosaires.park.hyatt.com, is a red-walled, walk-in cheese room - the first of its kind in Argentina, highlighting as yet relatively undiscovered Argentine artisanal cheeses based on European styles. The maître fromager encourages producers to age cheeses exclusively for the restaurant. Tasting plates served at a marble communal counter table include an earthy brie from Córdoba; Cordon, a goat's cheese from Mendoza aged 15 months; and Morbier, Manchego and Parmesan-inspired cheeses matched with fresh-fruit marmalades and outstanding Argentine malbecs...
Hoping to avoid such a catastrophe, Mexico has been quick to condemn foreign governments that have suspended commercial flights, calling the actions discriminatory. In a televised speech, Calderon urged nations that have cut off plane routes to Mexico - including Argentina, Colombia and Cuba - to reconsider. "I ask all the nations that they stop taking actions that only hurt Mexico and don't contribute to stopping the spread of the disease," he said. "Mexico will fight this virus better in collaboration with the rest of the world." Officials in those countries claimed, however, that they don't have huge stockpiles...
...Even if H1N1 seems to lack the killer instinct at the moment, flu viruses are unpredictable, and there's no guarantee that it couldn't change form. Flu season in the southern hemisphere is just beginning, and if the virus establishes itself in countries like Argentina or Australia, it could cause real damage. ...19th century, Argentina was one of the world's richest countries; poor European emigrants found themselves choosing between New York City and Buenos Aires. Somewhere along the way, though, things took a turn. Much has been written about why some economies thrive while others flail. But compared with works like Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel, Beattie's take is markedly less deterministic. Corruption may have killed Africa, he notes, but it worked rather well in South Korea, where bribery attained taxlike precision. Beattie, an editor at the Financial Times, develops a few themes: free trade is good. Infrastructure...
Michelle Obama and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy are adding new luster to the role of the 21st century First Lady - with their style and smarts, they complement and sometimes even outshine their high-profile husbands. Other recent First Ladies, such as Hillary Clinton and Argentina's Cristina Kirchner, have used their experiences in the halls of power to launch themselves into political offices of their own. But Veronica Lario, wife of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, has a different approach to this historically supporting part...
