...Experts say women have led only other women in prayer--and many Muslims are against change. Opponents flooded Wadud and the organizers with angry calls and e-mail. Outside the cathedral, a dozen protesters held signs that said, MIXED-GENDER PRAYER TODAY, HELLFIRE TOMORROW. One veiled woman voiced an argument common among conservative Muslims everywhere: Restrictions on women are for their protection--and are "signs of respect." Inside the hall, police ejected a man after he burst in, shouting "God save your souls!" The organizers "should be stoned," he said later...
...exposed to "secondhand smut." Jack Thompson is a Coral Gables, Fla., attorney who filed a series of complaints against Stern that resulted in a $495,000 fine against Clear Channel Communications. A decency hard-liner--he thinks shock jock Stern should be in jail--Thompson doesn't buy the argument that parents should just turn off the TV or radio. "It isn't necessarily what we keep our kids from," he says, "but our inability to keep other kids from certain material, who then share it with our kids in school and elsewhere. It's like dumping toxic waste...
Consider the Feb. 17 episode of CSI. A form complaint letter available at the PTC website describes the episode, and it's icky stuff. The plot is about infantilism, a sexual fetish that involves adults wearing diapers and suckling at women's breasts. Given its relatively early broadcast time [9 p.m. E.T.], it was without question viewed by millions of children...
Andrew Sullivan's Essay on abortion presented a sound middle ground for those on both sides of the issue to approach [March 7]. I hope the argument of moral consequences vs. a woman's right to choose can be set aside in order to focus on what everyone really wants: fewer abortions. As a staunch pro-lifer and Christian, I have a hard time admitting that we need to increase access to contraception, but I certainly would accept pills and condoms (with a healthy dose of lessons on abstinence and self-control) to avoid the taking of human life...
...sisters, whose ages range from 27 to 41, live in a hardscrabble Catholic neighborhood of East Belfast. On Jan. 30, Robert, 33, a forklift driver and a father of two, was at a pub in Belfast when he got into an argument. It spilled into the street, where McCartney was stabbed and beaten to death by a gang that allegedly included I.R.A. members. The perpetrators cleaned the scene, removed closed-circuit television footage and intimidated witnesses, the sisters and police say. Some witnesses have come forward but have denied seeing the actual attack, and no one has been charged. "Seventy...
