Besides drawing this false parallel, Sharfstein shows a lack of understanding of the argument against criticism. He suggests that those who discourage public criticism of Israeli policy in the territories do so unconditionally and do not "recognize Israel's faults." This is wrong. Though they are reluctant to attack Israel, they do not deny, publicly or privately, that Israel has its shortcomings; they merely choose to criticize constructively to those who have the power to effect change in Israeli policy--to Israeli leaders and voters and Jewish leaders who may be able to influence Israel's decisions--rather than offering...
...between enemies. I, too, expect Israel to live up to a higher standard than its Arab neighbors--to not sponsor international terrorism, to not force its children into battle as a propaganda technique, to punish, not reward, the violations of its soldiers. But Sharfstein fails to present a realistic argument in favor of open criticism of internal Israeli policy. His comparison with criticism of a Jewish religious issue is hollow; his assertion that failure to point out Israel's shortcomings actually hurts Israel is wrong. As a Jew who claims loyalty to Israel, he would do well to direct...
...externship programs programs and grant money (as well as its diploma) to males, the varsity football squad rejects aspiring female linebackers and neither sex is allowed in the other's respective public bathrooms. Militant smear tactics are the last refuge of those unable to make a compelling legal argument that will distinguish between the Fly Club and things as harmless as Wellesley College, both institutions that deny their benefits to members of one sex. When reason and sobriety are beyond one's capabilities, only slander remains as an effective political weapon. SWAT, ZIP and their cohorts hope that repetition...
...Another argument can be made against criticism. Perhaps by criticizing, American Jews are giving non-Jews an opportunity to push for a reduction in aid to Israel. In this case, simple criticism would lead to much harsher results than intended. American Jews would have to stay quiet in order to keep the situation from getting worse...
...only is this argument wrong, but its reverse is true. American non-Jews are not blind. They see what Israel is doing in the occupied territories, and they are rapidly reevaluating support for Israel. Unless American Jews are willing to guide American policy by contributing to critical discussion, decisions will be made without Jewish input...
