...Survey, a Twentieth Century Fund research staff headed by Economist J. Frederic Dewhurst issued a 1,148-page statistical description of the present economy, plus a projection of what the U.S. would be like five years hence. Dewhurst's key prediction, on the assumption that U.S. peace arid prosperity will continue, is that 1960's gross national product will be $413.5 billion, up 29% from 1950, 16% from 1954. The U.S., with less than 7% of the world's population, already produces one-third of all the world's goods and services, almost one-half...
There are some 4,000,000 Bhils scattered through the arid lands of west and central India, and they are poor, even for India. A wife, a cow and a plow are enough to make a Bhil a rich man. The Bhil's special god in the Hindu pantheon is Kaladev, "the Black God." While enlightened on the subject of caste ("There is only one caste which embraces all mankind"), the god Kaladev has long blessed the Bhil custom of concealing their women under heavy sacklike cloaks that cover their heads completely. Tantia decided to liberate them...
Arabella is basically an old-fashioned Viennese operetta-the sort that Johann Strauss really did much better than Richard†-without the courage of its corn. In Arabella, the waltz and schmaltz have been refined and intellectualized. Composer Strauss wrote this score in the tragically arid last third of his life, and he filled it with hints and quotations reflecting other works. His hand had lost none of its craft, and all the score lacks is inspiration. The Met postured prettily in its new hat; actually, Arabella was just an old toque...
Prophets & Promises. Nehru's confusion was all the more apparent, since he had journeyed south purposely to stump against the Communists in the tight, important campaign for the Andhra state elections. The Communists are driving hard to win in Andhra, an arid land cut by ravines and deep poverty. The Communists are stronger there than anywhere else in India. Andhra is India's first "linguistic state," formed in 1953 among the 21 million Telegu-speaking people. As such, it is only one of 29 Indian states, but India's Communists hope to make it their first conquest...
Some time after 11p.m., at the command of an offstage voice, the receiving line broke up and debutantes arid their escorts retired to an anteroom to prepare for the big moment. The scene was something like the prelude to a mass wedding, with mothers tearfully primping their daughters and fathers making appropriate comments ("My little girl's all grown up"). But after a while the prides of parents left their daughters and drifted up to their boxes, the Meyer Davis orchestra struck up The March of the Toys, and the formal presentation began...
