Before the terrorist attack, Begin had been having domestic problems of his own, stemming largely from the very issue that has most upset Carter: the Israeli settlements policy. As he arrived in Washington, Defense Minister Weizman got word that Agriculture Minister Ariel Sharon had ordered work started on two new settlements on the occupied West Bank of the Jordan River in defiance of Weizman's order that they be stopped. In a heated call to Jerusalem, Weizman pleaded with Begin to halt work on the settlements until after the Premier's own Washington trip. "If only one tractor...

...after days of heated debate over whether to stop the expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied territories, finally concluded that there was "no need at this time for any new decision." Jerusalem's announcement highlighted a serious dispute within the fractious Begin Cabinet, which has Agriculture Minister Ariel Sharon pressing ahead with new settlements while Defense Minister Ezer Weizman calls for an end to that activity during the negotiations. ...supporting cast, and the actors of The Tempest all put a maximal effort into their parts. Particularly noteworthy are Johanna Defenderfer and Eva Simmons as Stephano and Trinculo, a pair of fear-stricken, drunken and very funny sailors. Ralph Zito turns in a macho, manic performance as Ariel, the spirit forced to do Prospero's blading. Joe White, as Sebastian, gets off some well-delivered lines, and Paul Rosta is a perfectly doddering, if one-dimensional, old fool as Gonzalo. The rest of the sailors and nobles are adequate, as is the troupe of harpies who pop up sporadically...
