With a take of $34.8 million this weekend, "Armageddon" fell far short of the $51.1 million that "Men in Black" grossed last year on the Fourth of July. Add to this the fact that "Godzilla" earned $35 million less than last year's Memorial Day winner, "The Lost World," and you might think the major studios are ready to plead poverty. Been there, done that. Just a month ago, come to think of it. Except that Armageddon, as directed by Michael Bay, doesn't give a hoot about making a deep, humanistic impact on us. Or even a shallow one. If it can be said to be about anything other than orchestrating the explosive string of special effects on which its last act endlessly dwells, it is about class conflict...

...Bruce Willis action picture "Armageddon" brought in an estimated $34.8 million this July 4th weekend, far more than the $19.8 million by last week's No. 1 (and this week's No. 2), Eddie Murphy's "Dr. Dolittle."
