...This is not exactly Rockefeller country," Alabama Governor George Wallace wryly observed on the eve of the Vice President's trip to the South. But last week, in a mere two days of back pounding, arm squeezing and conservative oratory, Nelson Rockefeller managed further to blur his past image as a big-spending liberal and convince many amazed Southerners that he is really one of their own. In his two stops at Mobile, Ala., and Columbia, S.C., he did not eliminate the conservative opposition to his remaining on the ticket in 1976, but he went far toward moderating...
...usually a sexual marketplace. Though most bars are classless?a college professor may walk out arm in arm with a welder?the trend in big cities is toward variety and segregation. There are bars for writers, artists, blacks, collegians, businessmen, middle-class women, "drag queens," transsexuals, male prostitutes and sadomasochists. At the Eagle, an s. and m. bar on Manhattan's Lower West Side, the uptown "Bloomingdale's crowd" is derided by a tightly packed throng of men in leather and Levi's. ...Director Dick Richards (Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins) seems mostly interested in matters of decoration. No use telling him or Screenwriter David Zelag Goodman that just under his plots, Chandler was writing about Los Angeles, about levels of corruption, about resistance to the hard sell and the strong arm. Those are difficult matters to deal with, and Richards and Goodman avoid them. Goodman wrests a standard mystery plot from the book that Chandler considered his best. Richards uses it as an excuse for a sort of 1940s masquerade. Watching this movie has approximately the same effect as being locked...
...frug, the boogaloo, the monkey and similar "hang-loose" mating rituals consisting of uncoordinated grinds, bounces and St. Vitus-like contortions that had men and women dancing at each other, the Hustle brings back basic steps-elaborations on a tap, 1-2-3,4-5-6 arrangement-and stylized arm movements in which the dancers are partners again. At the B.B.C. (for Bombay Bicycle Club) on Chicago's Near North disco row, Songwriter-Composer Robbin Grand explains: "Before, it wouldn't have mattered if the girl I was dancing with was at a disco a block away. There...
