Going for the record in St. Louis last week, Wills looked like a walking mummy as he dressed for the game. Huge strawberries from sliding marked his right thigh, and it had to be armor-plated in adhesive tape. But his imploring fans were not disappointed. Singling to first in the third inning, he took off for second like a Texas jack rabbit; trying to cut him down, the St. Louis catcher threw the ball into center field. That gave Wills base No. 96 to tie the record. Four innings later, he went off for second again. The throw seemed...
Ghelderode was a recluse who lived most of his life in a room full of marionettes, dress-shop dummies, swords, armor and sea shells. His work was somewhat ignored in Europe and almost totally in the U.S. He died last April-and now it seems that he is about to surface as an intellectually fashionable...
...paddies in shallow-draft sampans. Alerted by the observation plane, ten huge grey U.S.-supplied amphibious personnel carriers raced to the scene, ran head-on into the Reds. Shielded behind armor plating, army troops machine-gunned the survivors. The toll: 154 Viet Cong troops killed and 38 captured, to twelve government soldiers wounded...
...cartoon, in a satirical French weekly, shows Charles de Gaulle all gussied up in Louis XIV garb as he packs a herculean suit of armor and Cyrano-sized nosepiece for a sally across the Rhine. "Madame," says the general to his wife, "will you please not forget my pajamas." No Dish Twice. But France's President will have very little time for sleep in the course of a strenuous six-day visit to West Germany this week. From Hamburg in the north to Munich in the south, the Germans-at De Gaulle's request-have laid...
Agilulf, the Nonexistent Knight, is so perfect a knight that his body has turned entirely to armor. He cannot be wounded in battle, scorns his fellow knights who must care for their flesh. But he often longs for a mortal body. His armor is "pierced through every chink by gusts of wind, flights of mosquitoes, and the rays of the moon." For other knights love is spiritual by choice; Agilulf has no choice. When a maiden he has rescued invites him to bed, poor metallic Agilulf hems and haws, makes and remakes the bed, finally finds a knightly excuse...
