...tufted stalks of elephant grass as we arrive at the crash site in the late afternoon. Suddenly, the dense undergrowth gives way to an unnatural clearing of dirty gray sand littered with the half-recognizable detritus of the shattered gunship: broken wheel struts, a bent propeller blade, rusted armor plating, scraps of the fuselage. Resembling patches of smudged snow, remnants of the plane's once white fiber-glass insulating material are scattered everywhere. Surprise, surprise Frankie's boyfriend Nick (Paul Mones) was the foiled mugger, and after recognizing Morgan at school as the law-abiding. Knight-in-Shining-Armor, he orders his remarkably violent gang to trash Morgan's bike. Further surprise--Morgan is captivated by Frankie, even though she is taunting him right beside her boyfriend, and his bike is lying in ruins at his feet...

...those irritating fictional non sequiturs of Donald Barthelme that prove without effort that the world is a strange place. The last short piece is called The Leather Man, after a strange tramp who wandered southern New England in the 19th century, insulated from the world by an outer leather armor he had devised. It is an awkward tale that works only intellectually, as an argument the author is having with himself. Is it possible that a life can be understood only when one has deliberately estranged oneself from it, turned oneself into an outsider, a leather...
