While Yeltsin still enjoys public support, there is no shortage of would-be successors trying to stir up discontent and resistance. Opposition groups range from communist movements nostalgic for Stalinist strong-arm rule to ultra-right nationalist parties preaching Russian imperial supremacy. Most of the early reports were based on an exit poll of 1,848 people by Voter Research and Surveys, the polling arm of the four major television networks.
