...Hugo Eckener, the Graf Zeppelin's designer, commander and world navigator, was twice a godfather. A pass in the Coast Range of mountains east of San Diego, over which he sailed three weeks ago, was named Eckener Pass by Major Carl Spats, Army flyer, and Commander Van Arnauld de la Perier of the German cruiser Emden. In dedication they flew over the pass, dropped a parachute with a, German and a U. S. flag attached.
