...weekend's other new film, Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island, which has a stranger visiting a rainswept island near Boston after someone's mysterious disappearance and trying to unravel a conspiracy that may threaten his life. That picture - with a gallery of unreliable characters weaving a web of lies around the baffled hero, who must discover the perpetrator by searching for clues in hidden notes - has been widely compared to Hitchcock and film noir; but it might also be Scorsese's tribute to Polanski. From the moment he enters Lang's island compound, the Ghost feels thwarted by the P.M. and his staff, led by Lang's probable mistress (Kim Cattrall). Proving that a political campaign is war by other means, they form a phalanx around Lang's achievements and vulnerabilities; their job is not to help the Ghost but to contain and confound him. Several suits have asked volunteer drivers to wait past midnight for a ride and then complained when the volunteers went home rather than stick around for the tipsy bigwigs. (In fairness, the manager did say that this same group of IOC officials gave away 50 event tickets to the volunteers...
...that night, a group of army officers calling itself the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy appeared on national television and announced the suspension of the constitution and dissolution of all state institutions. An unnamed uniformed officer asked the people of Niger to "remain calm and stay united around the ideals postulated by the council," which were to "make Niger an example of democracy and good governance" and to "save Niger and its population from poverty, deception and corruption." The whereabouts of Tandja were unknown. (See China's investments in Africa...
