...have been hit hard by the recession, and this company has been especially pressed since the death of founder Robert Joffrey in 1988. Temporary salvation came when new fan Prince (or Prince Rogers Nelson, as he is called in the program) donated several of his songs. Artistic director Gerald Arpino invited four choreographers to contribute: Laura Dean, Charles Moulton, Margo Sappington and Peter Pucci. None is known primarily for classical pieces, but all clearly responded well with the highly polished Joffrey dancers. The results vary in quality, but the whole evening reflects an enthusiastic effort to marry the discipline...
...Arpino was wise to put this little fancy first. Because the costumes are glistening white and the women wear chignons, the classical echoes are clear when the scene shifts to the street. Moulton, on the other hand, establishes himself on the corner right away. Thunder/Purple Rain is a variant on the familiar sex-and-salvation theme. Elizabeth Parkinson plays a sort of fairy who transforms bystanders into lovers with a wand crowned, rather like a car's hood ornament, by a heart. Unfortunately, Moulton makes the song Purple Rain into a dismal solo that looks arduous to dance and provides...
...world in recession. Rome in 1592 had a great past but a mincing present. The accepted style was a filleted if showy kind of late mannerism, turned out by the frescoed acre by artists like Caravaggio's early master Giuseppe Cesari, alias the Cavaliere d'Arpino. Limp, garrulous, overconceptualized and feverishly second hand, Roman art in 1590 was in some ways like New York art four centuries later. Against its pedantry--the seicento equivalent, perhaps, of our "postmodern" cult of irony--Caravaggio's work proposed a return to the concrete, the tangible, the vernacular and the sincere...
CITY CENTER JOFFREY BALLET. From half a dozen dancers practicing in a former chocolate factory, the Jeffrey has grown into a troupe of 43. In 1967, Choreographer Robert Jeffrey created Astarte, the first multimedia ballet. But it was Associate Director Gerald Arpino's Trinity (1970), a contemporary barn dance set to the throbbing sounds of a rock band, that roused a Leningrad audience to 36 curtain calls and a 27-minute ovation during last fall's Russian tour. Summer activities include a West Coast tour in June...
More rewarding was the aptly named Jackpot by Gerald Arpino, the company's resident choreographer. It was a mod, witty duet that suggested a Greek god and goddess having a sexual romp in outer space. As the curtain lifted, a shower of colored star beams descended to reveal Glenn White flexing his muscles on a cube-shaped platform. From behind the cube popped the curvy figure of Erika Goodman, who led White on a merry chase that culminated twelve minutes later in a highly suggestive climax. The cube lit up, a smoke bomb went off, rubber balls soared through...
