...Christmas-season crash of a chartered DC-8 jet at Gander, Newfoundland, that killed all 248 military passengers and the crew of eight claimed another casualty last week. Arrow Air, the Miami-based company whose jet was ferrying home members of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division from Sinai peacekeeping duty, filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11. Of Arrow's 500 employees, 400 were furloughed, and all but a handful of charter passenger and cargo flights were canceled...

...after the President entered the room. Ronald Reagan had just returned from a memorial service at Fort Campbell, Ky., and the pall carried over to the gathering on Capitol Hill. There was a moment of silence for the 248 soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division who died in the Arrow Air crash two weeks ago. Then it was down to business. More than 160 G.O.P. Congressmen were eager to explain why they had voted to prevent consideration of a bill drastically overhauling the nation's tax code, and the President was just as eager to persuade them not to kill...

Questions were raised as well about the maintenance record of the stretched- out DC-8, which was built in 1969 and had logged 50,000 flying hours for a succession of five owners. The plane's final owner, Miami-based Arrow Air, has a less than exemplary record. After inspections last year, the Federal Aviation Administration fined Arrow for faulty record keeping on its maintenance procedures, for using outdated service manuals and providing inadequate instruction to maintenance personnel. The small airline and charter service sometimes shuttles troops for the U.S Air Force's Military Airlift Command, but Arrow was flying...

After clearing the Arrow DC-8 for takeoff at 6:45 a.m., the Gander tower operators heard nothing more from the crew. The four-engine jet began its roll, speeding past Deadman's Pond on its left, and its wheels left the runway at 6:49. It was airborne for less than one minute before veering to its right and dropping...

Customers like the megadealers because they generally offer lower prices and a staggering supply of cars. At Robert Ciasulli's 14-acre Arrow Auto Mall in Little Falls, N.J., shoppers can select from cars made by GM, Chrysler, AMC and Renault. The experience, though, may be disorienting for those accustomed to traditional showrooms. Some megadealers are like assembly lines. One floor person shows the car, another closes the deal, and still another handles paperwork after the sale. Also, local dealers' repair shops may be less helpful to customers who bought cars from out-of-town megadealers. Many car buyers, however...
