Broken Arrow, a bomb-ticking chase movie about a daredevil pilot (Travolta) who steals two nuclear weapons, shows how easily the two cinemas can coexist. It flies at the speed of Macho 2 while allowing Woo to unpack his full cinematic arsenal: overhead shots, plenty of steamy atmosphere (Travolta smokes a lot), Cuisinart editing of the action scenes, slow motion to prolong the jitters and, for dialogue scenes that other directors would stand flatfooted and watch, lithe little tracking shots. If film school were fun, Woo would be the nutty professor...
...terrorist camp near Sarajevo. Less than 48 hours before the Rome conference to boost compliance with the Dayton peace agreement was scheduled to begin, French soldiers raided a former ski chalet 20 miles west of Sarajevo and found nine men, including at least three Iranians, sitting atop an extensive arsenal of grenades, submachine guns, explosives and boobytrapped toys. The Iranians were in direct violation of the Dayton agreement, which said all foreign forces were to have left Bosnia by January 19. But what has the U.S. most worried were allegations that Bosnia's Muslim government had links to the Iranians...
...Army seems more haunted by the prospect of leaks from the aging arsenal. The first mainland incinerator was rushed into construction in 1989 with only 60% of the blueprint complete. Located in Tooele, Utah, home of the nation's largest chemical stockpile, the facility was built by EG&G Defense Materials Inc., under contract to the Army. But Utah residents are wary of the military after the atomic-testing scandal of the 1950s. "The firebricks blew up in the kiln at Johnston," says Steve Jones, a safety inspector who was fired by EG&G in 1994, after just three months...
Much remains to be done. There are serious concerns over how much the drugs will cost and whether they will be in short supply. Moreover, it is still not clear just how long they can prolong life. But for the first time doctors may have at their disposal an arsenal of weapons that can battle the virus at virtually every stage of its life cycle--not just in the final days but from the earliest months after infection. Says Dr. Warner Greene, director of the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology in San Francisco: "It seems as if the tide...
BETWEEN 1961 AND 1966, COLORADO'S ROCKY MOUNTAIN Arsenal cranked out 300,000 M-55 rockets, which are now stockpiled at five of the nation's chemical-weapons storage sites. Too late, the Army discovered that the design of the weapon has a potentially fatal flaw: sarin, the deadly poison that was packed into the nose cone, tends to corrode the aluminum casing. And sarin leaking into the rear chamber accelerates the decay of the stabilizing agent that prevents the rocket fuel from "auto-igniting.'' Because there is no way to safely dismantle the rocket, the deadly nerve agent...
