...Despite countless news stories, profiles and biographies of Bush, word of the incident had apparently sat undisturbed for years in the Cumberland County court records. That changed last Wednesday when reporter Fehlau showed up at the courthouse to cover an arson trial. A policewoman told Fehlau she had heard a lawyer and a judge talking about a Bush DUI conviction in Maine. Fehlau spotted the lawyer, Tom Connolly, walking out of the courthouse. Did he know anything about a Bush DUI? Yes, he said. And he had a copy of the docket back at his office...
Finally some genuine action. The Firebugs torch buildings in this satirical indictment of German apathy as a reaction to the Third Reich held in a fictional city being torn apart (down?) by arson. The arsonists come to your doorstep as homeless men looking for shelter, and they don't leave. See it for the Greek chorus of firemen choreographed by James Carmichael. Or for the all-star cast which includes Alexis Burgess and Emily Knapp. Or for McClelland's original production which includes video and slide projections to set the scene and perhaps a real fire to torch the scene...
Which invites a question: what do they do with the rest of their time? Crimson research has ascertained that there are Lampoon editors inside the castle at virtually all hours of the day. What could they possibly be up to? Campus legend has it that unspeakably depraved acts of arson, noise pollution, and drug abuse are par for the course in the Lampoon's guarded clubhouse...
...hard not to feel bad for Stephen C. Hely '02, the Lampoon's president, who now may face charges of arson and criminal negligence, not to mention disciplinary action from the College.
