...anyone bothered to read our literature, this BGLTSA works on wonderfully substantive programming that includes volunteer work at local high schools and gay rights organizations, fighting harassment in first-year dorms, the renewal of a long-dead support group on coming out, the promotion of queer studies, phat dances, art shows and speaking events. We are more than silly sensationalists, silly, masturbatory fags and dykes out to put our egos and personal pathologies on display. Idealistic, perhaps, in our desire to screw the world, but alive, angry and proud...
...should come out (everyday). We should be politically active. We should hold killer dances and literary events and tables in the Quad and art exhibits and theatrical presentations. But, in addition, there needs to be a safe place within the community where those questioning or hiding themselves can meet with others like them, others who are comfortable with themselves and those who are straight and compassionate. Perhaps the BGLTSA should first provide a more comfortable environment and then, when such students are ready, involve them in the pursuit of political goals that do not divide...

The main problem, though, is that the music is all too polite. Cole's last CD, This Fire, had moments of wild art-rock invention; here, she is content to relax in the groove. Her lyrics, though, can be admirably biting. The album's last song, God Is Watching, condemns "new slavery prison systems/ Holding one in four Black American brothers." If Cole is looking for amens, she'll get one for that line...
