...walk around Emerson and look up carefully at the eaves you will see the inscription, "What Is Man That Thou Art Mindful of Him?" This inscription plaque was originally going to bear some sort of fruity paean to the excellence of man but President Abbot Lawrence Lowell, class of 1877, decided that he was going to teach the faculty a lesson in humility and he ordered that the less than exuberant quotation from Job be chiseled...
...perceived as important, and its opinions have, it is true, rearly concurred with those of the sultans of University and Massachusetts Halls. At times these opinions have found their way into news coverage, just as they must unavoidably find their way into any newpaper's front page. The art of newspapering is just that--an art, nor a science--and cannot be exercised with the precision of a dean--human precision, varying according to individuals. Like the Kansas City, Mo., runner who was knocked to his knees, and suffered puncture wounds and scratches...

Touring Europe in 1927, Stone had his first look at the stark glass and aluminum "international style" that he would use in his 1937 design for Manhattan's Museum of Modern Art. But years later, after his El Panama Hotel in Panama City was built in 1949, Stone denounced his austere designs as resembling "the latest model automobile, doomed to early obsolescence." Aiming at what he called the "assurance of permanence," he turned to more solid structures of concrete, brick and stone...
