...intervention in the circulation and distribution of artists’ video.” It began as a way to broaden the audience for this particular medium and to make video art more accessible.Video art developed in the 1960s and 70s as a cheap and accessible medium for artists and audiences alike. Its nature allows for broad distribution, making video art a preferable way for artists to get their work out. In more recent years, however, it has become less available to the general public and much more expensive for people to acquire, with some rentals costing more than...
...arts are not created equal. These days, if you want to be a successful artist, chances are you’ll want to be a visual artist and not a poet. If you happen to make it big as a painter, you might just auction off something for half a million at Sotheby’s or Christie’s. Making it big as a poet means you might sell about 50,000 copies. “And let’s assume the writer makes a dollar a book,” adds Emily K. Vasiliauskas...
...main auditorium, the Palau is the crown jewel. Calatrava himself described the 40,000-sq-m building as the culmination of 14 years' work. So at 23, on June 2, 1940, he introduced The Spirit, which...
...that raises my last quibble about the museuming of comics. Many of the artists included as writers more than "directors." Put it this way: would you rather see (read) Kurtzman's Mad or Spiegelman's Maus illustrated by other artists, or have others write stories for which Kurtzman and Spiegelman provided the drawings? The first, obviously, because the genius was in the writing. Indeed, though Kurtzman and Feldstein did their own drawing for some EC comic covers and stories, most were illustrated by terrific artists (Elder, Wallace Wood, Jack Davis) who brought their own personalities to the equation. At Marvel...
