Freyre's recommendations show his basic contempt for native civilizations. Intermarriage is necessary, in his view, to raise the level of the natives. Such an attitude can only lead to a further polarization of the world between white and non-white. If Asian and African leaders make racial appeals, it is precisely because of this racist attitude on the part of the Europeans. Let the white man stop imposing his various schemes of "tropicalism" on the non-white world and give them a real freedom of choice. Rogelle Reyes GSAS
Something Better. To Walter Lippmann, from the start it was "a grievous mistake to have involved ourselves so much in a part of the world where it is impossible for a non-Asian country to win a war against Asians." Nor, in Lippmann's view, did proponents of a "clean war" in Viet Nam-one fought in the skies rather than on the ground-have any case: "The fact is, that if we make the Vietnamese struggle 'our war,' we shall have to fight on the ground to hold South Viet Nam. "It will be done as part of some much larger and more elaborate diplomatic proposal and action-one directed at something far bigger than South Viet Nam-at an Asian settlement from Siberia to the Himalayas, from the Mekong to the Yalu...
...comically silly," Alsop wrote from Saigon last week, "to try to organize the kind of government in Viet Nam that will win the august approval of American editorial writers who know nothing of Asia and always seem to forget that the alternative is the bleak and ruthless tyranny of Asian Communism. There is no way out any longer, except to try to deal with the war crisis first, and to leave the political situation for later consideration. Dealing with the war crisis is the only way to create the essential conditions for comparative governmental stability. The government is unstable precisely...
Rapid Tentacles. Histadrut's possessions include the Workers' Bank, Israel's third largest (135 branch offices and $190 million in deposits); Solel Boneh, a construction firm that has built $100 million worth of projects in eleven African and Asian countries, including Katmandu airport in Nepal and the University of Ife in Western Nigeria; Koor Industries, a complex of 30 factories that turns out everything from cement and glass to steel and light bulbs; the Zim shipping company; and 90% of Israel's domestic bus and truck transport...
