...total double standard--it shouldn't be ok for asians to have an explicitly asian pageant because it would NOT be ok if there were an all-white beauty pageant (let's face it, we all know that people would flip sh*t if that ever happened...

also, did anyone ever stop to think that it's possible this "contest" is simply a way for Wellesley asians to snag themselves an asian ivy-leaguer. I know that, culturally, many asians are pressured by their parents to date within their race, and it just seems like this sort of event perpetuates that kind of close-mindedness. and i really don't think this is strictly an asian stereotype--it's common within many races/ethnicities/religions...

...chef, Theo Schoenegger (yes, he's Italian), can make some music too, including a killer agnoletti topped with shaved truffle. Full disclosure: Schoenegger knew we were coming, but you can't hide bad food or bad execution. That proved to be more than true at the Encore's pan-Asian offering, Wazuzu, where mediocrity ruled, from the bland shumai to the uninteresting sushi to the disinterested service - our waitress abandoned us midway through the meal for her break. She was following labor rules, we presume, but the handoff was less than smooth...

...Even before Wynn and others moved to Macau, the former Portuguese colony and den of iniquity that is now part of the People's Republic of Gambling, Las Vegas was catering to its Asian clientele. The Encore is no exception. The elevator panel shows the floors climbing to 63, but floors numbered from 40 to 49 are missing, since the pronunciation for the number four in Cantonese and Mandarin is too close to the word for death.
