...charter for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was signed on July 21 with much flourish and a promise to "strengthen democracy, enhance good governance and the rule of law, and to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms." An admirable undertaking, except that the person formally ratifying the charter was Nyan Win, the Foreign Minister of Burma, a country with one of the world's most appalling human-rights records. Indeed, Burma's signing of the document during this year's ASEAN ministerial meeting in Singapore threatens to render meaningless the lofty humanitarian goals...
...mustering the credibility necessary for a Kosovo-like humanitarian intervention for at least a generation. Sudan provides ready evidence of that. The International Criminal Court recently indicted Sudanese leader Omar Hassan al-Bashir for war crimes in Darfur. Given America's post-Iraq reputation, some combination of European, Asian and African leadership would be needed to bring al-Bashir to justice, but even this is unlikely. On the same day that Karadzic was arrested, 13 years after his first indictment, the African Union asked the U.N. Security Council for a one-year delay in taking action against al-Bashir...
...museum itself, opened by the Malaysian government 10 years ago, focuses not so much on Islam's traditional heartland in the Middle East as on its Asian domains, the works of which are often overlooked in Islamic-art collections. Several are testimony...

His new book is by turns a solid career guide, inspirational tract and source of knowing advice for young Latino, Asian and black professionals. "If you're going to play the game," he counsels, "you'd better know the rules...
...population of 7 million, has an undeniable cosmopolitan sheen as a financial center and budding cultural hub. Yet, lurking beneath the flashy skyscrapers, are hundreds of thousands of ethnic minorities who don't fit comfortably into this Chinese city's conception of itself. Many, particularly among the South Asian community, have roots here that predate some of Hong Kong's Cantonese people by generations, yet they are often made to feel like outsiders. Most Africans and South Asians living in Hong Kong have their own horror stories of racism, from humiliating police searches on the street to being blocked from...
