...after the end of the Civil War with German progress of the last two decades. Growing up in Pennsylvania in the 1950s, I knew of those North vs. South prejudices and the status of African Americans and other minorities. It was dangerous to travel in certain southern states - just ask any civil rights activist. While Germany has its own racial and immigration problems with sporadic outbreaks of violence, they are nowhere near the magnitude of those in the U.S. The "wounds" seem to me to be healing much faster than you claim. The world must get off Germany's back...

...they may be correct to do so. With the banking system still shaky, further big declines in house prices could bring disaster. Slowing a price collapse is a reasonable aim of government policy. But as we dig out of this mess, we ought to ask whether the vast infrastructure of government support for homeownership that has been built up since the 1930s is really such a wise policy...

Obama did pledge - as he has before - to end the Pentagon's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy. But once again he said nothing specific about how he plans to do that and didn't acknowledge that he already has the statutory power to instruct the Pentagon that investigating service members' sexuality is not in the best interest of the armed forces. Also, he said that gay relationships can be "just as real and admirable" as straight relationships, but he did not say gay couples should be treated equally. Obama, after all, still opposes equal marriage rights...
