Samuel and Isadore Horvitz were quietly turning asphalt into gold as Ohio paving contractors, back in the 1920s, when a newspaper publisher attacked their bid for a city contract. The Horvitz brothers decided that the way to answer Publisher Raymond Cyrus Hoiles was to go into the newspaper business them selves, in competition with Hoiles's papers in Lorain (pop. 44,000) and Mansfield (pop. 37,000).
