Ristelhueber's Thucydidean concept of the inevitability of human conflict and violence seems to be a particularly insensitive message at a time like this. It is almost offensive to assert--whether explicitly or implicitly--that attacks that kill innocent civilians by the thousands are simply part of an immutable historical continuum. The exhibit is not upsetting for what it shows, but for the inappropriate message it offers. Even if Ristelhueber is able to chronicle one disaster after another with artistic detachment, she (and the MFA) should take into account the need at this time for emotional response and moral valuation...
...cells are either funneled directly into network activity or collected from around Europe by couriers for pooling and redistributing from London - which investigators call the headquarters for Islamist terrorism in Europe. In addition to the evidence linking Bensaïd and Belkacem to the 1995 blasts, French prosecutors assert there are records of wire transfers from a suspected Islamist named Rachid Ramda, as well as the duo's own detailed accounting of how that money was spent to prepare strikes. Though far from perfect, Israel has shown extraordinary concern for avoiding civilian casualties in its half-century effort to protect its civilians from terrorism. Jordan killed more Palestinians in a single month than Israel has between 1948 and the present...
...live subjects. John Gilbert, a former U.N. and Pentagon chemical-weapons inspector who viewed the tapes, says the dog's spasmodic reaction indicates that it might have been subjected to a nerve gas like sarin. Bin Laden is known to have tried to develop unconventional weapons: U.S. intelligence officials assert that while living in Sudan in the early '90s, he tested nerve agents that could be dispensed by bombs or artillery shells. In early 2000, CIA Director George Tenet warned that bin Laden "operatives have trained to conduct attacks with toxic chemicals or biological toxins." The new video suggests...
