Each researcher is assigned to special areas of the magazine. The girls take part in story-planning conferences, gauging pictorial possibilities in meetings with the editors and writers, then call, cable, assign or personally go after the photos from which the editors make final selection. The procedure we use for getting color pictures is somewhat different but no less intense. While some black and white pictures come from TIME'S own files, or those of sister publications, most are gathered specifically for the stories with which they appear. The researchers must know the best source for an existing picture...
...only an illusion. The Roman collar is as big a put-on as his accent and his wig. Under them is an effete, seething schizoid (Rod Steiger) who can kill when he assumes an identity other than his own. But who is he? New York's police assign a green, gawky Jewish detective (George Segal) to find the answer. After eyeballing the first victim, Segal promptly advances a pop-psych theory to the press: the murderer, he argues, is a mother hater who takes Mom for a slay ride every time he garrotes a middle-aged lady...
Some Doubts. Atlanta's Mayor Ivan Allen Jr. was so impressed with the report that he has already ordered the city planning department to analyze it in detail and then assign specific recommendations for action to various departments. The Chicago city council passed a resolution hailing it as an "outstanding report of unparalleled importance," although Mayor Richard Daley was unhappy that it had not criticized strongly enough the "criminal elements" that take part in riots...
Analysts are most concerned about a stock's price-earnings ratio-that is, its price relative to earnings per share expected in the current year. Professionals tend to assign rather low P-E ratios to companies with profits that are rising only as fast as the U.S. economy's gross national product. Thus, the Dow-Jones industrials now have P-E ratios averaging less than 17 to 1, down from 21 to 1 just before the 1962 market break. Analysts give much more generous P-Es-50 to 1, or more-to companies with profits that rise faster...
...constitution, the ex-colonels' attitudes appear more activist. They seem not only eager to suppress leftists but also to break the power of the Greek Establishment. Under the new constitution, the monarch will no longer have power to appoint and dismiss Premiers or to promote and assign generals. He will, in fact, have none of the power that made it possible for the Greek throne to create its own mini-aristocracy of loyal retainers...
