Into this crowded agora comes David Bowers' Astro Boy, an animated feature based on Osamu Tezuka's 1951 manga series that spawned a TV cartoon series from the '60s. (I confess I never saw it, because I was out doing stuff that decade.) The new version, streamlined and Americanized, but with animation from the Hong Kong company Imagi, lacks the brand recognition of the big CGI studios, but the movie has its charms. Imprecise measurement has long crippled efforts to find Earth-like planets that may represent scientists’ best hope at finding extraterrestrial life, but Harvard scientists say a new laser-based measuring tool could bring the universe into sharper focus. The astro-comb allows astronomers to discover Earth-size planets, which are most likely to support extraterrestrial life because larger planets tend to be entirely gaseous and inhospitable to organisms like those on Earth. The laser provides a way to measure the near-imperceptible changes in a star’s light that are induced by orbiting planets. Planet gravity...

...When he sold the company in 2000--just before the Internet-stock bubble burst--the undisclosed selling price was big enough to allow Kavli to return to the great unanswered questions of basic science that had long fascinated him. He wanted to endow major prizes for research in his astro-nano-neuro triad, the fields he thinks will produce the most exciting discoveries in the coming centuries. In particular, he wanted to finance early-stage research, the bold ideas that may be many years away from producing tangible results. Quantum physics, for example, seemed totally impractical until engineers used...
