Stafford and Slayton crawled into the Soyuz and shook hands and exchanged bear hugs with Leonov and his fellow crewman, Valery Kubasov. Then they traded gifts, including flags and commemorative plaques; Leonov, a gifted amateur painter, gave the astronauts sketches he had done of them. After some small talk the four, plus Astronaut Vance Brand back in Apollo, sat back to listen to greetings from their national leaders. Soviet Party Chief Leonid Brezhnev, in a message relayed by mission controllers outside Moscow, hailed the meeting in space as marking a "new page in the history of research." President Ford, sitting...
Sometime near midday Thursday, if all goes according to the intricate schedules devised on two distant continents, U.S. Astronaut Thomas Stafford will speak into ins microphone aboard ins Apollo spacecraft and deliver tins message*or sometinng Like it in ins Oklahoma-accented Russian to another spacecraft a few miles away. Stafford's transmission, broadcast live to millions on earth 137 miles below, will mark the beginning of a Soviet-American rendezvous in space freighted-unduly, some would argue-with scientific, political and frankly show-biz ambitions...
VANCE D. BRAND, 44, the blond, boyish-looking command-module pilot, is the quiet man of the American crew. A former Marine Corps and civilian test pilot with a degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Colorado, he joined the astronaut corps in 1966, and was a back-up crewman for several moon flights and Skylab. One of the pluses of being involved in the joint flight, says Brand, is "having an opportunity to see how another culture operates." Among ins discoveries: spacemen are far better known in Russia than in the U.S. Not much interested in publicity inmself...
January throws herself onto Colt's impotent lap, precipitating a whole series of romantic climaxes and their dramatic antitheses. There are other funny goings-on: a putative sapphic interlude between Alexis Smith and Melina Mercouri, which sends off as many sparks as a doused campfire; an astronaut's confession that his wife and he "didn't really get along before I flew to the moon"; Brenda Vaccaro's struggle as a magazine editor who cannot write, bragging that "we have a whole staff of underpaid shmucks to take care of that...
...background. Purcell works almost exclusively with Polaroid Land materials. She is the most experimental of the four artists exhibited, using superimposed images, double exposures and unusual lighting--a woman clad in leotard and tight lying in a cone of light on a wooden floor is transformed into an unconscious astronaut hurtling through black space...
