...triumph of the march? Civil rights leaders themselves had a hard time putting it into words. "We subpoenaed the conscience of the nation," said Martin Luther King Jr. The march was informal, often formless-yet it somehow had great dignity. It had little of the sustained suspense of an astronaut shoot or a national political convention-but it built, despite moments of boredom and restlessness-to an emotion-draining climax. It was in the probable effects on the conscience of millions of previously indifferent Americans that the march might find its true meaning...
After a few short but interminable seconds, U.S. Astronaut Neil Armstrong placed his foot firmly on the fine-grained surface of the moon. The time was 10:56 p.m., E.D.T., July 20, 1969. Pausing briefly, the first man on the moon spoke the first words on lunar soil...
With a cautious, almost shuffling gait, the astronaut began moving about in the harsh light of the lunar morning. If the on-screen Glenn seems somewhat priggish next to the other fighter jocks, he also seems tailor-made for the presidency. Has anyone ever suffered in a primary...
...value of his image, film or no film. He is absenting himself from the gala opening of The Right Stuff in Washington on Oct. 16, evidently recognizing that it would be unseemly to exploit the movie so blatantly. After all, it would just not do for a onetime astronaut, a guy who is decreed by Hollywood to have you-know-what, to display a touch of vainglory. - By James Kelly.
