...spiritual account, this history is nowhere nearly so effective as much of his other work. Instead of the penetrating commentary on contemporary atheism as an excuse for sloth, vice, and weakness which he gives with urbane wit in The Screwtape Letters, we find a revolution of 'vices' in himself. This is of course natural; he points out that he has never attacked the two vices which never tempted him--homosexuality and gambling. But many readers will find what he now regards as vices not at all wicked, for Lewis before conversion is much like the world today...

...brief months, the American Legion seemed ready to stop shooting its patriotic artillery at UNESCO. In May, a special Legion committee reported no truth whatever in earlier Legion charges that the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization was teaching atheism, communism, and world government. Five months has, however, evidently brought the Legion back to its battle stations, for instead of accepting the committee's report, the annual convention last week began once again to fire away with its blank charges...

Dropping its former complaints about atheism and communism, the Legion this year stuck to the sole issue of "subversive educational materials" which support "a nebulous world government." It is difficult to know what the Legion means by these nebulous phrases, for the purpose of UNESCO has been clearly stated again and again. Since its beginning, the U.N. agency has tried to bring about better understanding between peoples on the subjects of education, science, and culture, but it has never threatened the sovereignty of any member nation. Quite the contrary, UNESCO must work through its member nations, for it is actually...

...tavern brawl has troubled historians ever since the record of the inquest was located in 1925. Not until then did scholars learn that Marlowe was stabbed in the presence of three men--all notorious-spies--just before he was to go on trial, and perhaps on the rack, for atheism. Questions immediately arose over the accuracy of the inquest. Could Marlowe have died instantly from the wound described? Why was the confessed murderer pardoned within four weeks by Queen Elizabeth? These questions have led some biographers to conclude that influential men in the government wanted Marlowe, who had also engaged...

When Gloria DeHaven and Ricardo Montalban take over from their dancing colleagues, the play shows little noticeable improvement. Certainly, few actors could appear rational in a dialogue such as the serious conversation about atheism which they must carry on in a sewer, but it would hardly be excessive to ask the stars of a musical to be able to sing. As the chanteuse Diane, however, Miss Miss DeHaven reveals only a rather light voice which requires amplification, while Montalban, cast in the role of Chico the sewer-cleaner, is content to speak rather than sing his lyrics. Neither gets much...
