...same treacly religious platitudes that Thomas writes for a living, in hymn and verse form. Thomas believes in them as little as Martin. "There is no loving God, just a cruel beast. There is no hope, no such thing as miracles." he says gloomly, laying bare his fundamentally pessimistic atheism. His wife, on the other hand, firmly believes in miracles, and sees Martin as a hope for her daughter's recovery...

...throughout the week, Graham seemed oblivious to the precarious role of religion in a country that endorses scientific atheism and outlaws public evangelism. It is a country where only the officially sanctioned Russian Orthodox Church is permitted to exist in relative peace, where Protestant groups are tolerated only if they accept government restrictions and are harassed if they do not. The Baptists who heard Graham's gospel can hold worship services, but they cannot preach the word of God in public or bring up their children with religious instruction. As a result of Graham's confusion, or perhaps...

Lest views be tempted into backsliding, atheism, or switching channels, Bakker observes that "freethinkers" invariably die, usually from cancer, disease, or drug overdose. Though more prosaic than being struck by lightning, such fates are equally effective. In a 1979 interview. Bakker traced India's problems to a rejection of Christian principles. In Africa, he insisted, the Christians live in better houses. As a couple from Canton, Ohio, announced on PTL. "Belief in God blessed us financially and then spiritually...

There are, he insists, many more Christians in the world than meet the eye. He cites the example of the Soviet Union, where his project coincided with an official Kremlin survey on the spread of atheism. Surprisingly, he won top-level clearance to work closely with Communist Party researchers, who turned out to be scrupulously objective in collecting data. The resulting estimates: 137 million Soviets are irreligious, but an impressive 97 million remain Christian. There, as elsewhere, Barrett found masses of members known only to the churches. Worldwide there appear to be 70 million so-called crypto-Christians. Even...

...this campus who count anyone serious about their religion as infantile or disturbed. From the days of Elmer Gantry, evangelists have never enjoyed much support in circles like ours; though Graham drew respectable crowds, he stirred up relatively little fervor at still-Godless Harvard (where apathy has replaced atheism, non-belief being almost as taxing as faith). At the risk of sounding like a Good Book-thumping proselytizer, that pervasive lack of interest is a shame, especially for those who hope for the thoroughgoing change of this nation and this world into places where justice thrives. Graham's continuing transformation...
