...plot begins when Timon, a wealthy Athenian merchant, spreads his seemingly limitless riches among his friends and lavishes penniless Athenian artists with his patronage. He has no ulterior motive: he is simply a kind and generous soul who lives, unconsciously, far beyond his considerable means. His life becomes full of complication once the steward Flavius reveals that Timon's estate is mortgaged to the hilt. As the news leaks out, creditors begin to hound the generous merchant. Timon is forced to appeal to his friends, who, predictably, refuse...

Spider-Man and his Marvel superhero pals inhabit a comic-book-bright boulevard. Toon Lagoon is haunted by old favorites from the rotogravure, like Beetle Bailey and Dagwood. Jurassic Park's primeval foliage conceals a labyrinthine playground, a Discovery Center where you can see a raptor egg hatch, a Pteranodon Flyers ride that lets you soar above the park and a mechanical triceratops that pees and farts on cue. The beast, nicknamed...

...home in Japan, I find that every current movie not based on Thomas Hardy seems to be derived from Henry James. The only reason not to catch Victor Hugo onscreen is that we caught him on Broadway a few years ago. This week sees Ally McBeal venturing into an "Athenian" forest in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Indeed, the hottest writer of treatments in Hollywood (as he was three years ago) is that high-concept old guy Shakespeare. Keanu Reeves in Shamela? Bette Midler and Stephen Dorff in The Merry Wives of Windsor? Who knows where it will...
