Merchandising matters. O.K., so we've known that for a while. But ever since the over-commercialized Atlanta Games in 1996, host cities have made a big deal of being all about the sports while treating merchandising like a necessary evil. Vancouver proved it doesn't have to be that way. The enormous success of the red mittens - sales of the $10 gloves generated more than $12 million for Canadian sports - "helped us clarify our thinking around what could become the iconic collector's item of the Games," says Manning-Cooper. 2012 umbrella, anyone...

Georgia state authorities have ordered an investigation into 191 public elementary and middle schools--more than half of them in Atlanta--after a Feb. 10 audit found that an unusually high number of wrong answers on students' standardized tests had been erased and replaced with the correct ones. Of those schools, almost two dozen had suspicious erasure patterns on more than 50% of classroom tests, suggesting an orchestrated attempt to raise scores and improve school standing under the No Child Left Behind Act. In reference to downtown Vancouver's main strip of nightclubs, he said, "Granville Street itself is unlike anything I've seen at an Olympics." And he noted that all the drinking has led to a lot of public urinating. "I've personally witnessed about...

Good news from UPS may also be good news for Main Street. The Atlanta-based UPS and its main rival, FedEx, are in some ways economic bellwethers. The 15.1 million packages that UPS handles every day translate into about 6% of the U.S.'s gross domestic product and 2% of the world's. Consider too that the shipping giants may actually be lagging indicators. "In downturns, companies let inventories deplete before they restock," Becker says. "That means demand--and the economy overall--must go up significantly before UPS's business improves...

That was true from the days when, while teaching in the 1950s and '60s at Atlanta's historically black Spelman College, he participated in the early, dangerous days of the civil rights movement--and lost his job as a reward...
