...some region or other of the universe. Hannes Alfven of Sweden's Upsala University holds that the rays are free-moving particles in space accelerated to cosmic ray energies by the magnetic fields of spinning double stars - somewhat as the man-made machine called the cyclotron speeds up atom-smashing particles to high velocities by means of repeated electrical pushes...

...Louis de Broglie. Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrodinger of Germany and Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac of England had been expected but did not appear. These five men alone have created almost the whole structure of Quantum Mechanics, which deals mathematically with the mathematically complex innards of the atom. Presumably, Herren Heisenberg and Schrodinger were forbidden to attend because of the Nazi Government's antipathy for the League of Nations. Why Dirac of democratic Britain did not appear was not disclosed. Physicist Heisenberg's paper was presented for him by colleagues from Belgium and Holland...

...atom, which is neutral in electric charge, becomes ionized when one or more of its tiny electrons is knocked away by an outside force. The particles resulting from ionization, including both the freed electrons and the remainder of the atom, have electric charges, and can exert electric force...

...tracing back this ancient peculiarity, scientists may find that the ordinary lead atom carries within it at least a partial record of physical and chemical development when the earth was young. For one thing, a continuation of this study promises to reveal important clues as to the mechanism of the formation of lead ores...
