...Atom-Test Suspension. The U.S. view: either disarmament or test suspension, actually parts of the whole, must be accompanied by foolproof inspection controls. The Macmillan view: much the same in principle-but the British are willing to take greater risks in deciding what constitutes foolproof controls. Says a British spokesman: "The Russians don't like foreigners swarming around their country. We don't think they should be allowed to have a veto over inspection, but we think some arrangement can be made so there is no swarming in of foreigners." Even in its unilateral decision to halt atom...
Recent reports that the earth may be pear shaped are disquieting. The change in Terra's shape might be invoked as a reason for preparing for Judgement Day, stopping atom bomb tests, or continuing the study of geography at Harvard. As of now there are no plans to replace the visiting professor of geography, Henry C. Darby, when he leaves; the Administration claims among other reasons for this, the difficulty of finding men in the field who are up to the University's standards of scholarship...
...Quake. It was no accident that this repressive law was modified in the year of the great Tokyo earthquake. A current Japanese joke says it took an earthquake to start the emancipation of women, and the atom bomb to set it going again. The 1923 temblor destroyed 60% of the city, killed 143,000 people and ruined many of Tokyo's upper and middle classes. In its aftermath, the educated daughters of these families (education for women dates from the Meiji Restoration in the 19th century) discarded their kimonos, bobbed their hair, donned Western dress and became sales clerks...
...BRITISH ATOM SUB reactor will be built by Westinghouse, first such reactor to be sent abroad. Westinghouse got contract because no British firms build the pressurized water reactor found best for subs. British firms have been concentrating on large generators for power stations...
...third semester in such a natural sciences program could also be one of a number of offerings. A continuation of physics might go into basic electrostatics, electricity and the atomic model. Such a course would introduce the student to the implications of constructs as in field theory and raise questions of scientific truth, existence, and the ideas of operationalism. A basic chemistry option, or a semester which stressed the atom and the universe--ideas of astronomy, galactic origins, relativity--would also have value. In each of these courses, the subject matter would represent a compromise between the dilletante survey...
