...glimpse into the everyday life of a terrorist- turns out to be a soccer fan.) St. Andrews' Ranstorp thinks the tape suggests that the Sept. 11 attacks fit into a classic al-Qaeda pattern: an operation is conceived in the field (in this case, by Mohamed Atta, who is thought to have piloted American Airlines Flight 11, the first plane to hit the Twin Towers), then referred back to the leadership in Afghanistan for approval...

...agents believe that Binalshibh, a.k.a. Ramzi Omar, is a dedicated terrorist who planned to join his Hamburg roommates Mohammed Atta and Marwan Al-Shehhi and their frequent companion Ziad Al Jarrah as the 20th hijacker in the September 11 terror attacks. Binalshibh had registered at the Florida Flight Training Center, attended by Jarrah but was denied a visa because the State Department feared a poor Yemeni would remain in the U.S. illegally. The Germans have charged him with terrorism conspiracy, along with two other Atta-Binalshibh buddies, both Moroccans, who have also disappeared. The FBI has quietly positioned agents within a short flight of Afghanistan, hoping Binalshibh and his pals will turn up alive and tractable...

Spanish intelligence sources have suggested to their foreign counterparts that some members of the Abu Dahdah cell may have met with Atta in the coastal town of Salou during his still largely unexplained 10-day Spanish sojourn in July. Last week investigators in Madrid would say only that they were still looking into that. Said one: "There?s no question that Spain was not just a strategic zone for laundering money and identities, but also a natural meeting point for Islamic militants from all over...
