Better to Judge. The committee recognized the special problem of dealing with Communists and other subversive groups. The report decried proposals, arising out of "near-hysteria," which would restrict a Communist's freedom to speak. The committee recommended instead that groups "which attempt to influence public opinion" be required to disclose all pertinent facts about themselves, as now required of business by the SEC. Said the report: "Our purpose ... is to enable the people better to judge the true motives of those who try to sway them...
Cold Pistol Barrel. The Sachsenhausen prisoners, ranged in two rows in a playpen-like dock, made no attempt to deny their crimes. Some of them, doubtless under Russian influence, talked like the accused in 1937 purge trials. "I got into this net of criminality," said dark, intense August Hoehn, the camp second-in-command. (In one day, Hoehn had hanged, gassed and shot 510 prisoners in petulance over a superior's rebuke.) "I got so tangled in its strands, I couldn't go back. At the mere thought I could feel the cold barrel of a pistol...
...commanded a motorized brigade in the battles of Caballon, Guadalupe and La Granja, and rose to be a division commander just before the end. Back home, he was welcomed at first, then thrown in jail for eight months on suspicion of taking part in the first-and unsuccessful-attempt on Trotsky's life...
...Commissioner Judge James T. Houlihan, Miami Forecaster Grady Norton spelled out his suspicion. Aerial seeding of the hurricane with dry ice might very well, he claimed, have diverted the storm from its course (500 miles out at sea, headed for Bermuda). The joint Army-Navy-General-Electric experiment (an attempt to break up the storm), Weatherman Norton explained, might have been at least partly responsible for the storm's abrupt left face and subsequent heavy march through Florida and Georgia...
...book is an improvement on its forerunners: Dreiser is no longer content to draw a caricature with his fist; he attempts to paint a portrait, and regards his villain with some compassion. Cowperwood is loyal to the wife he does not love, and sincerely devoted to his mistress. He never repents his deeds, or sees a need to, but he makes a futile attempt at good works by endowing, in his will, a charity hospital. This escape-hatch from hell is closed, however, when the ill-gained wealth is dissipated by executors, lawyers and heirs...
