PARK THEATRE. - 7.45 P. M., Matinee Saturday at 1.45. On Monday, the Union Square Company began playing Mr. Edgar Fawcett's "False Friend," The plot depends on the attempt of Lucien Gleyre (Mr. Thorne) to pass himself off as Cuthbert Fielding (Mr. Courtaine), who is supposed to be dead. The dramatic interest is very great, and well sustained, although the materials are by no means new. The acting is, throughout, excellent, as is to be expected from this company. "French Flats," a very amusing piece, adapted from "Les Locataires de M. Blondeau," is in preparation...
...stands is very deficient. Even after the first year there are no steps taken to secure a thorough English education for the students. Sophomore rhetoric increases rather than diminishes the evil, because the least attractive side of the study is presented. We ought rather to read good English than attempt to correct bad; and rhetoric, naturally connected with composition, is, by the present system, entirely divorced from it. Recitations in rhetoric are attended, themes are written; but what connection between the two exists in the mind of the student? Our English electives, too, are deficient, not in quality...

In the Boston game, which also was played during vacation, Macullar, a professional, took the place of Mr. Winsor, as the latter was so unwell as to be absolutely unable to play, although he appeared on the field and made the attempt. In neither instance did these professional substitutes receive any compensation for their services. Had these games been played in term-time we could have filled the vacant places with substitutes; as it was, we were obliged to make use of any one we could get, in order to save ourselves from...
...April; hence no one can complain that sufficient notice has not been given of them this year. Beyond what satisfaction there is in knowing exactly when one is to be tortured, we cannot, however, see how this early announcement will make preparation materially easier. It is useless to attempt to take time needed for term work or for recreation in order to prepare for examinations to come in two months, or even in one month. Under our system, work for examinations can hardly be begun more than two weeks beforehand; - seldom then, without neglecting something else, perhaps of more real...
...looking, and was gifted with what our grandmothers call an inquiring mind. He opened fire when we reached the railroad-crossing, with "See the nasty water!" uttered in a piercing treble that punctured the drum of the ear like a sharp needle. Encouraged by the success of his first attempt, he continued the conversation during the rest of the trip. His mind at first grappled with the nautical questions of the day. "See dere." "Yes, dear," from the grandmother; "that is a ship." "Why don't it tip over?" "Oh, because it's balanced by the mast." "But the little...
