...principal contribution to the November Monthly is a poem, "Prometheus Pyrphoros," by J. T. Stickney '95. The poem is an attempt to imagine what was contained in a lost play by Aeschylus. The versification, however, which is almost entirely of blank form, does not follow the model of the ancients. Instead of ten syllables to a verse there are more often eleven, with now and then a passage in rhyme. The style as a whole is very subtle and obscure. The basis of the poem is the fable of Prometheus: He attempts to bring light and fire to the people...
...debate centred mainly on the question whether the Filipinos would ever become capable of self-government. All the speakers did a great deal of rebuttal in their opening speeches and there was no attempt at dodging the issue by either side. The opening speech of Bruce for the negative was the best speech of the evening. Chandler's best work was done in rebuttal where he was very strong. Seasongood had a very clear delivery and presented his arguments forcibly. Fitzpatrick and Catchings brought forward good arguments but their delivery was not as clear and forceful as that...
During most of the first half the teams played poorly and neither came near scoring, both being strong on defense and weak on offensive play. Near the end of the half, however, the substitutes began to play more concertedly and began a determined attempt to score. With the ball in midfield Brayton and Devens began a series of line plunges which netted thirty yards. Gierasch's fifteen yard run then took the ball to the ten yard line, and after two plunges by Brayton, Gierasch made the touchdown...
...second touchdown came only a few minutes later. Graves's fumble of a punt and Kendall's fumble after being tackled gave Pennsylvania the ball on her twenty yard line. On Hare's attempt to punt J. Lawrence broke through, blocked the ball, kicked it over the line and fell on it. He also kicked the goal...
While the choice of players went on, little attempt was made to develop team play. The men were brought into the best possible form of individual play and it was not until then that the modelling of the team as a whole began. Just before the Bates game, however, the coaches began to get the most promising candidates to work together, especially on the defense. W. H. Lewis L. S. '95 and B. G. Waters '95 took up this and in the secret practice before the Carlisle game they worked hard at the defense, but the results were not satisfactory...
