...course, all of this is hogwash. Having attended Harvard as an undergraduate, and having taught here for six years, I can attest that the Faculty is in no way a festering cauldron of left-wing lunatics. Overall, its members are a diverse and impressive group of hard-working scholars, variously committed to teaching and public life, open-minded and broadly tolerant, but generally quite slow to voice their dissent on most matters. In other words, they are politically liberal but temperamentally quite moderate. Much like the undergraduates they teach, they are more interested in professional success than in social justice...

"I won't tell you how close she came to losing her life," Mark Wild, the ice-maintenance technician who applied first aid before paramedics arrived, told TIME before the Games, his voice breaking with emotion. Moreover, the best hope to check fundamentalist Islamic terrorism, as well as more politically-oriented Iraqi insurgents, is through vigorous reproach from other Muslims. Censure from America, the UN, and others has been ineffectual, but an internal denunciation from one’s religious compatriots surely makes a more meaningful impression...

Summers has been a forceful advocate of revamping an outdated undergraduate curriculum. To this date, Harvard lags unacceptably behind rival undergraduate institutions in providing a sensible general education program to its students...
Will the Harvard Corporation please, please remind the Faculty that the University’s primary responsibility is to its students, not to its pampered faculty? Families make large sacrifices to send their children to Harvard (as I can attest to with two kids currently enrolled in Harvard College). The Faculty of Arts and Science’s antics are becoming tiresome to say the least. Any faculty that deems itself above the interests of its students does not deserve to be at Harvard...
