Colonel Broome, the advance officer of the British world fliers, arrived from the North at the Kurile Islands off Japan, after a two months' adventurous and turbulent voyage in the Canadian trawler Thiepval. Broome established bases on Behring Island, Attu and other places in the Aleutians in preparation for MacLaren's trans-Pacific flight. There was no doubt that even with the best of luck this is extremely dangerous territory. Martin's disappearance only served to emphasize its hazards.
