...them discuss the matter on a bench outdoors. Oberwetter says he refused to accept the illegal materials. What Oberwetter did not know was that the encounter was being videotaped, allegedly by a BBC correspondent named David Taylor. The video was turned over to the FBI, but without any audio, it proved nothing. Nevertheless, agents heard rumors that Taylor was preparing to air or distribute the video. That sparked the FBI sting. "It created a real dilemma for us," says one law-enforcement official. Why? Because the feds thought the ensuing media bonfire would destroy all hope of testing Oberwetter...
...title track Dita asks, "If I take you from behind/Push myself into your mind/When you least expect it/Will you try and reject it." The naughty little form/context twist is that at standard club volume, the fat bass line under this song does physically invade your body. Other audio tricks abound. "Bye Bye Baby," for instance, whips Madonna's voice into a studio-distorted baby doll. The album also features a foray "Deeper and Deeper" into discoland, as well as a paean to oral sex in "Where Life Begins." And if you ever wondered what "Justify My Love" would sound like...
Apple's CD-ROM joint venture with Toshiba is focused through Kaleida, a subsidiary at work creating an operating system that will make the disks playable on a variety of computers. The CD-ROM can hold digitized text, still images and even video as well as audio. Its main appeal is that it can accommodate data equivalent to that carried by 1,000 regular computer disks or about 250,000 pages of text. At this point, fewer than 5% of personal computers are equipped with CD-ROM players because no standard exists: a CD- ROM for Apple, for example, does...
Still, the man for whom the machine is named isn't worried about EJV, Dow Jones or Reuters. They can be outfoxed, he insists. While they are spending heavily to develop futuristic products that incorporate audio with full-motion video, for instance, he plans to introduce this year a lower-cost system using sound and still images. "What frightens me," he says, "is the little guy in the garage I don't even know about right now." In other words, the only thing that scares Bloomberg is the next Michael Bloomberg...
...Audio purists may grouse that the CD quality makes these sounds ring clear, instead of down and dirty. That is a little like a car collector griping that some fine detailing on the chrome spoils the lines. Spruced up though they are, these songs sound nasty and urgent as ever. The quality is so direct and uncluttered that it can take you straight back to the days that drummer Sam Myers recalls in the album notes, when he, James and the band would pile into a nine-passenger station wagon with their instruments and head on down the road...
