Gilbert '11 received the Distinguished Service Cross with the following citation:--"For extraordinary heroism in action near Fismes, France, Aug. 26, 1918, and near Remily, France, Nov. 10, 1918. On Aug. 26, Lieutenant Gilbert made a daylight reconnaisance of the ruins of Tannerie near Fismes, entered Fismes under direct observation and fire of the enemy, and continued his reconnaisance along the Rouen-Rheims road under machine gun fire, for the purpose of ascertaining whether or not the terrain was favorable for an attack on the Chateau du Diable.
