While everybody is claiming victory, Operation Rescue's tactics appear to have backfired. In a poll published Aug. 11 by the Wichita Eagle, nearly 80% of respondents opposed the group's methods. The same number said the protests had no impact on their views on abortion, while 15% said they now felt more inclined to support abortion rights, and less than 8% felt more supportive of abortion restrictions...

...dared not let the pact go into effect. Now, in the wake of the popular upheaval that defeated the putsch, the treaty has become a dead letter, judged totally inadequate to slake the republics' suddenly sharpened thirst for independence. At barest minimum, what was still officially one country on Aug. 19 will be four. The center, as Soviets call the government in the Kremlin, is no longer even trying to keep the three Baltic republics in any kind of union. A rapidly growing list of foreign governments last week formally recognized Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia as independent countries and even...

...hindsight, even the timing seems screamingly obvious. Gorbachev had designated Tuesday, Aug. 20, for the ceremonial signing of a new union treaty with the presidents of the Russian and Kazakh republics; other republics were expected to sign later. Some of the eventual coup leaders, including KGB chairman Vladimir Kryuchkov, Defense Minister Dmitri Yazov and Interior...

...case came to light two weeks ago -- just as Milwaukee mass-murderer Jeffrey Dahmer was making headlines -- when Louisiana police arrested Evans. He told them he had kidnapped, raped and strangled Beatrice Routh, a 10-year- old homeless girl, on Aug. 1. As proof, he led police to her body in a grassy field off a rural Mississippi highway. Last week a murder charge in the Routh case was filed against Evans in Mississippi. Federal kidnapping charges will follow this week...

...resignations came after a whirlwind week in which the trading scandal grew to menace the health, and possibly the very existence, of the 81-year-old firm. The trouble began Aug. 9, when Salomon said it had suspended managing directors Paul Mozer and Thomas Murphy and two other employees. Their major misdeed: violating federal rules against acquiring more than 35% of Treasury notes and bonds at a government auction. The ceiling is designed to prevent large firms like Salomon from purchasing enough of an issue to dictate the price of the securities when they resell them to smaller buyers...
