...Nation of Dreams Your cover story "India Charges Ahead" is a most compelling read [Aug. 13]. The rumble from the Indian economy is a sterling example to all the struggling nations in the world of what dreams can achieve, even when one has not yet overcome terrorism, mixed religions, a sad history of colonization, imperfect democracy, socialism, political missteps and years of wars. India's rebound in the global economy is multifaceted, but what inspires most is its ability to reach into a beleaguered past and a struggling present to continuously build a dream. Moses Ida-Michaels, Lagos...

...Harmony Through Hamas? Andrew Lee butters' story "A Sort of Peace in Gaza" puts all the blame on Israel [Aug. 13]. Would any other country in the world be expected to aid people who are trying to kill its citizens on a daily basis? Max Rosenthal, Huntsville, Alabama...

...million copies; the concert tour sold out all 42 of its arenas; the live show is touring 70 cities; and, of course, bucks are being made on High School Musical: The Ice Tour. Efron, the star of the movie and of the slightly bigger-budget sequel that debuts on Aug. 17, High School Musical 2--in which he plays a jock with a bowl haircut who just wants to save money for college and sing about it to his mathlete girlfriend--is among the biggest stars tweens have had since they wore bobby socks. Which, at this rate, they...

...unofficial first lady of New York City, Brooke Astor, who was 105 when she died Aug. 13, had taste, character and compassion. Always gracious and impeccably dressed, she presided over a vast social and cultural network but most enjoyed giving money away. When her foundation exhausted its resources, having spent $195 million to support institutions, programs and projects that benefited the public, Mrs. Astor celebrated that fact--and after that, she kept on contributing with her personal fortune. She had a sparkling sense of humor. She remembered names. And her intellect was lively: even at 100, she continued to write...
