...differences between the two men depends on the examination of tiny shards of evidence. According to agreed protocol, for instance, Hu can demonstrate first-among-equals status by entering meeting halls before Jiang. Yet Jiang often ambles into halls first. So Beijing's political insiders watched closely on August 22 as both men entered the Great Hall of the People to commemorate the centenary of Deng's birth. Just before Jiang entered ahead of Hu, the live television broadcast cut to a shot of the red star on the ceiling and didn't pan the hall until Jiang had seated...

Three times, the enemies of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf have attempted to take him out. They tried blowing up his motorcade twice last December. In August, police in Islamabad arrested 10 men who had an arsenal of rockets smuggled from the tribal territory along the Afghanistan border. According to the police, the plan was to launch murderous attacks during Independence Day celebrations on Aug. 14, hitting Musharraf, his Cabinet and the U.S. embassy. And that close shave came only 15 days after a suicide bomber tried to blow up Shaukat Aziz, a Musharraf ally who was sworn in as Prime...

This is not to say President Bush is now sailing toward victory. In a TIME poll of likely voters last week, Bush pulled in 46% vs. Kerry's 44% in a three-way race with Ralph Nader (5%). The poll showed a shift from early August, when Kerry had a 5-point lead, though in both cases the difference was within the margin of error. Bush may be showing movement, but more registered voters still say it's time for someone else to be President (49%) than believe Bush deserves to be re-elected (46%)--numbers sure to give G.O.P...

TIME's poll holds more worrisome news for the Kerry camp. On virtually every question concerning which candidate voters trust more on a given issue, Kerry's support has fallen. The 51%-to-42% advantage on managing the economy that he held in early August has eroded to 46% to 43%, a near tie on the matter voters say is the most important to them. Kerry's lead has dwindled from 18 to 8 points on handling health care, an area previous polls suggested would be a major Democratic strength...

Genesis, a mission run by NASA'S Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., was launched in August 2001 to solve a cosmic conundrum. Although the sun and the flood of particles it radiates make up 99% of all the matter in the solar system, earthlings have never been able to grab hold of much of that so-called solar wind, beyond a tiny bit collected by several of the Apollo missions. Earth's magnetic field causes the stream of hydrogen, helium and other elements the sun gives off to flow around our world like river water around a rock...
