Larry, at 62 one year younger than his brother, says disgustedly that there is little truth to Monty's portrait of their father, a gentle and kindly man known around town for his generosity. Among former townspeople who back up this view is Joyce Renebome, an aunt roughly the brothers' age who often stayed overnight at the Roberts' house. She and her daughter Debbie Ristau are writing a protest book, Horse Whispers and Lies. Both Larry and Renebome say they never saw any beatings. Larry and Monty shared a bedroom and took baths together; Larry says he would have known...

...tempted to send CCIV to your grandmother in Dublin, think again. Real traditional music from Celtic countries is as gritty and hard driving as good indie rock. It's best consumed live and kicking with a nice Guinness marinade. CCIV might be a hit with your Tuscon aunt who leads the self-realization workshop, but if your intended recipient is in Boston, go to The Burren and buy her a pint instead (live traditional music every night...

Among the expatriate Angelenos, there might be swaggering or display of battle wounds, an anecdote about the aunt whose Malibu home slid seaward. So at Harvard in the fall of 1998, pictures of that familiar smoke-darkened...

...grandmother, who was known for her "keen sense of justice and a sharp tongue," was hanged as a witch by the Puritans in Salem. The son of a farmer and a "birthright Quaker" mother, Carrier was the only child in a houseful of adults, including his grandparents and great-aunt. He seems to have been a born tinkerer and figurer-out of problems. Unfortunately, he was seriously handicapped by lack of wherewithal. He worked his way through high school, taught for three years and finally won a four-year scholarship to Cornell University...

Indeed, the funniest parts (for the older audience, at least) occur in the beginning of the movie, before Dil is ever born. For example, at the baby shower, Tommy's aunt airily tells the expectant mother, "You know what they say: born under Venus, look for a--" before being neatly cut off by her cell phone. And Drew, when his daughter demands to know why she is being left at her cousin Tommy's house for the day, sweetly explains that "Daddy has to work overtime so Mommy won't be ashamed of his corporate earnings...
