DIED. EUGENE KLEINER, 80, gentlemanly, Austrian-born Silicon Valley engineer and venture capitalist; of heart failure; in Los Altos Hills, Calif. In 1957, with $3,500 and seven colleagues, he came up with a way to mass-produce silicon transistors, a discovery that opened the door to developing desktop computers and cell phones and spawned companies like Intel. In 1972, he co-founded Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers, a venture-capital firm that helped establish more than 300 companies, including Compaq and Sun Microsystems...

...MEANWHILE IN AUSTRIA ... Hell's Bells Playing Christmas carols in shops during the festive season is tantamount to "psychological terror" for store workers, according to a study by an Austrian trade union. By the time the big day arrives, the study says, hours of listening to piped carols such as Jingle Bells and Silent Night will have made many store workers aggressive and confrontational. The union wants shops to limit the number of hours per day the music is played, and restrict it to areas where Christmas gifts are being sold...

...fact, police throughout the euro zone are reporting a sharp rise in cases of people caught trying to pass counterfeit bills. Austrian antifraud investigators who rarely laid eyes on a fake schilling before the changeover reported 3,000 cases of counterfeit euros last year. This year, they've seen 15,000, mostly originating in Bulgaria, says Erich Zwettler, an anticounterfeiting investigator in Vienna. Next door in the German state of Bavaria, police also report an increase in forgeries from Lithuania, Italy and Turkey (mainly coins). Some 7,500 cases are awaiting trial in Bavaria alone.
